Day 46 – mile 651 to mile 671

We hit the trail around 7:30am today. We passed by a “hiker feed” at a dude’s house who is simply named “The Captain”. This is something he apparently does roughly two weeks after Trail Days every year. He makes a crap-ton of free food for hikers. His house is literally right across a creek from the trail and he has a zip line to get there. Pretty badass, but it was too early in the morning for us to stop in when we got there. Anyway, I’ll come back to him.
We hiked on through some Pennsylvania-esque terrain with lots of rocks again for most of the morning.

Are we in PA? Why does PA get a bad rap as the rocky state? VA is just as bad so far.

Around 11am, we emerged to a gravel road and parking area and some excellent trail magic.

Awwwyea

Former thru-hikers Warpzilla (2007) and El Perro (2011) were hosting. However, due to the aforementioned Hiker Feed at the Captain’s, literally almost no thru-hikers were coming through. Oops… just a little unfortunate timing and placement on their part. They were pretty bummed about the lack of thru-hiking traffic. I did my part by hammering 2 cheeseburgers (slathered in chili), 2 hot dogs (also slathered in chili), and 2 Miller Lites (not slathered in chili) in 30 minutes (followed not long after by our planned lunch that we were carrying). Shortly after we had one of the nicer views in Virginia thus far from a spot called Wind Rock.

Mmm views...almost as good as hot dogs and beer

The only other excitement involved seeing the largest snake we’ve seen so far.

Big snake. No snakes or people were harmed in the taking of this photo.

We made camp near a flat spot above a pasture in the woods after 20 miles. Tomorrow looks pretty much the same as the last 2 days. Hopefully one of these days we get cell service so I can upload some of these posts!

Vital stats :
Mood – thirsty for more beer
Physical state – good other than lack of beer
Smell – really old cheeseburgers
Song stuck in my head – Dizzy by Jimmy Eat World

BIG honkin’ snake!! We have lots of snakes in our garden, but if I ever saw one that big
(even minus the venom) I think I might be a tad alarmed, to say the least!
You guys are really racing along at a great pace, however, I’m afraid you’re not going to be
in the area of Harrisonburg by the 5th. Nevertheless, I’d like to reiterate our offer of an
excellent dinner, if you are. I don’t have a smart phone (don’t want my means of communication to give me an inferiority complex) but my cellphone # is 610-739-7240. We’d
definitely try to pick you up! Thanks again for all the blogs & pics!

Hey Joann–thank you for the generous offer. As you can guess we aren’t all that close to Harrisonburg. If only we could hike a bit faster I’d definitely take you up on it!! We probably won’t be that far north for another two weeks or so. Thanks again!
